According to the dictionary, a pet is any type of a domesticated or a tame animal that is kept in a person’s home as a companion and is cared for affectionately. The practice of keeping an animal as a pet dates back to the beginnings of man. Pets are a type of companion that is well desired, and they seem to find a home in many places around the world.
There are many reasons why people enjoy having pets in their homes. Domesticated animals have their own personalities and dispositions. People enjoy these cuddling creatures for: company, protection, socialization, and status. Many people also like to have a pet because the animal gives them someone to take care of. This is a large reason behind the pet ownership of some parents who have empty nests, and many single people who simply desire to nurture another living thing. Carrying for a pet can be similar to taking care of a child. They both require special toys, clothes, food, and sometimes even their own room in a pet owner’s home.
There are a few downsides to owning a pet. Most of these are connected to the fact that all pet owners are responsible for another living and breathing animal. The negatives of a pet are often outweighed by the positives, but here are a few examples of the reasons some people may choose to live without a pet.
Pets take up a lot of their owner’s time. People who have pets have to make arrangements for their animals when a vacation or trip arises. Pet owners can also have large care bills that include vet care, grooming, training, and food. Also, we a pet passes away it can be a sad and traumatic experience for the pet owner.
Today, there are many popular pets. However, the two most popular pets are probably still the dog and the cat.
Domesticated dogs are thought to be decedents of the gray wolf. These dogs began healthy and friendly relationships with man over ten thousand years ago. Early man used dogs to hunt, and some pet owners continue with that tradition today.
In the Middle Ages dogs were the preferred pet for many people. The animal was a symbol of status and wealth. This lead to the beginnings of many dog breeds, which brought about the massive list of today’s available breeds and is one of the reasons that purebred animals tend to be very popular.
In contrast to the dog, the cat has had an ever-changing relationship with man. Cats have been associated with mankind for over nine thousand years. Back in ancient Egypt, cats were considered gods. Vikings used cats as companions and rodent catchers. They were loved by early man.
But that soon changed. By the Middle Ages in Europe cats were hated by many people. They were even exterminated during this time period. Some people believe that the massive killing of the feline during the Middle Ages is the main factor behind the spread of the black plague.
Today, cats are considered good luck in many countries and cultures. They are an animal that is used for companionship and to help with any rodent problem that might arise in a home or barn.
